This study evaluated the applicability of CO2 injection for Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) and Geological Carbon Storage (GCS) in the Lake Maracaibo Basin. The methodological design considered technical, environmental, and economic criteria for selecting candidate reservoirs. For EOR, the AX reservoir was selected, and seven scenarios were simulated, varying the injection rate and well configuration, including the injection of CO2, methane, and nitrogen. CO2 injection proved to be more effective, increasing the recovery factor by up to 10% (from 20% due to natural depletion to a range of 27–30%). Regarding GCS, the BX reservoir was proposed, with an estimated storage capacity of 66.51 million cubic feet of CO2 over 40 years. The Amuay and Cardón refineries and the El Tablazo complex were identified as the closest CO2 sources. The study highlighted the crucial role of 4D seismic monitoring technologies and Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms as fundamental tools to reduce uncertainty, delineate reservoir properties, monitor fluid displacement, and strengthen decision-making in the management of similar projects.
